Telefonica is the 4th largest operator group, with over 360 million subscribers globally and operations in 21 countries.

Challenge

Telefonica was faced with the prospect of needing to re-farm spectrum for a large number of their properties, moving it from 2G to LTE. They needed a partner who could scale to manage the project and provide a proven approach that delivered consistent results. They also needed a partner who could deal with a complex vendor environment that included 2G equipment from the likes of Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, ZTE, Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola and Siemens – all in a single multi-vendor process.

TEOCO’s Solution

Telefonica selected TEOCO to supply spectrum refarming and frequency planning services to Telefonica’s operator businesses worldwide for 2017-2018. At the end of 2018 the project was extended for an additional year. The solution provided by TEOCO leveraged Forte, our measurement-based 2G optimization tool. The process included a pre-refarming feasibility study and strategy definition, the refarming work, post refarming monitoring and mitigation of performance degradations, and finally, periodic frequency plan refresh services.

TEOCO has successfully completed many refarming and 2G optimization projects for various Telefonica properties over the past two years.
